UPC and EAN are retail product barcodes

In practical terms, they do the same basic job: they help a scanner recognize a product quickly at a store or in an inventory system.

QR codes and Data Matrix are two-dimensional codes
QR codes and Data Matrix codes are different from UPC and EAN because they are two-dimensional. Instead of storing data in just one direction, they store it both horizontally and vertically. That lets them hold much more information in a compact area. They can contain things like website URLs, serial numbers, lot numbers, product details, and other types of encoded data.
